The Essential Virtue of the Medium: The Sincere Desire to Serve

When we talk about mediumship, it’s common to think of extraordinary spiritual gifts, impressive visions, or elevated communications. But what really matters to the Higher Spirits when choosing a medium? The answer may surprise you: the essential virtue of the medium is not moral perfection — it is the sincere desire to serve the good.

This truth, present in the teachings of Spiritism, shows us how merciful God is and how He understands human fragility. The Friendly Spirits, deep soul knowers, understand that the medium is, above all, a human being in a learning process, full of imperfections, conflicts, and limitations.

The essential virtue of the medium is not perfection, but willingness

There is no perfect medium, nor is it required. If the Benefactor Spirits demanded flawless morals to grant their presence and assistance, they would hardly find anyone to serve them on Earth. This planet, being a world of trials and expiations, is populated by souls in constant rebuilding.

Thus, the Higher Spirits, in their wisdom and compassion, separate the wheat from the chaff — that is, they focus on the best in each medium. Their imperfections are not ignored but understood as a natural part of the evolutionary process. What really weighs on the spiritual scale is the commitment to good, the sincere willingness to collaborate with Jesus Christ in building a better world.

This virtue is like an inner beacon that the Friendly Spirits perceive from afar. When they see a humble heart that truly wants to be useful, they approach and offer support, guidance, and partnership in mediumistic work. Even if the medium stumbles or makes mistakes, if there is a constant effort to improve and serve, the good Spirits sustain and strengthen them.

We are all on the path

Allan Kardec, in “The Mediums’ Book,” makes it clear that mediumship is a natural faculty that can be used for good or evil, depending on how it is exercised. Therefore, more than extraordinary gifts, what really matters is the moral direction and the intention with which mediumship is practiced.

It’s not about turning a blind eye to faults but understanding that they are not absolute obstacles when the desire to serve speaks louder. The higher spirituality is always looking for willing workers, even imperfect ones, because they know that service in good is also a healing remedy, a path that enlightens, and a school that transforms.

Conclusion: The essential is invisible to the eyes but visible to the spiritual heart

The essential virtue of the medium, therefore, is not the absence of mistakes, but the presence of love for others, humility, charity, and the sincere desire to be useful. This vibration, when genuine, overcomes any temporary limitation and transforms simple mediums into bridges of light between Heaven and Earth.

If you are a medium or feel spiritual sensitivity, don’t be paralyzed by your faults. Work sincerely, pray with confidence, study diligently, and give your heart to the service of Jesus. The Friendly Spirits will find in you what is best, and that will be enough for great achievements.

I'm Hailton Souza, a retired accountant, a medium, and a lifelong passionate student of Spiritism. I created this blog to share a bit of what I've learned over the years about spirituality, mediumship, and a topic that has always fascinated me: ufology. Here, I speak from the heart, blending personal experience, study, and curiosity — always with a Spiritist perspective as the foundation. My hope is to help others who are also on a journey to better understand these subjects.
